Anita Baker give us today’s Song for Sunday.
In 1985, one of my favourite R&B albums was released. Anita Baker’s Rapture goes in my “Unskippable Albums” list, which is a pretty exclusive club. The track I’ve chosen from that album for today’s Song for Sunday is probably Anita’s signature tune. Opening the LP, Sweet Love sets the tone for the rest of the album; a mixture of smooth and powerful ballads. What makes Sweet Love so unique is its sound, detached from the electronic style of the decade. By 1985, hip hop was still young but its sound was slowly infiltrating into other genres. Anita Baker with songs like Sweet Love dusted the cobwebs off old standards and gave them a new lease of life with her beautiful bassy tones.
