SONG FOR SUNDAY #55: Prince – The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Prince’s The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is our Song For Sunday next week.

Having featured The Music Snobs last night as our One To Watch, I listened to a couple of episodes this morning dedicated to Prince. Out of all the songs discussed in both episodes, I decided to pick The Ballad of Dorothy Parker from his 1987 album Sign O’ The Times. The song typifies the amalgamation of genres and styles exhibited on the whole album with elements of soul, raw funk and pop. From the opening snare roll and insane drum programming to the minimal but funkadelic instrumentation,┬áThe Ballad of Dorothy Parker is something hip hop producers should pay close attention to with regards to the composition, placement of musical layers and drum patterning.
