We’re in Ukraine for our next stop on the European Hip Hop Tour.

Country: Ukraine

Population: (2010 estimate) 45,888,000

Capital: Kiev (or Kyiv)

Currency: Hryvnia (UAH)

Old places of interest

Because Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, there isn’t much of a “history” to go by. You can still take a look at our Russian instalment for a similar type of sound but that’s all we have I’m afraid.

Current places of interest

We have DJ Vag, The Cancel, VovaZIL’Vova, TNMK and Tartak to name but a few. The latter two were actually formed in the early 90s but didn’t come out with material until the late 90s/early 00s. TNMK are the most successful hip hop group in Ukraine and are still going strong. They are notable for their witty, yet often tongue-in-cheek lyrics, mixing hip hop with rock, funk and jazz music and playing real instruments instead of sampling and using drum machines.
