SATURDAY MATINÉE: Madlib At Radio France’s Vinyl Library

Madlib spoke to Laura Leishman about his favourite records and why Dilla is one of the greatest at Radio France’s vinyl record library.

For a man who keeps himself to himself, Madlib interviews are like gold dust and this is no exception. At Radio France’s vinyl archive in Paris, presenter Laura Leishman “unleashed” the West Coast producer onto RF’s bustling collection of vinyl in between questions about his record selections, his love of Sun Ra and just how many records Madlib owned himself (for those who don’t know, it’s about 4 tons. Of course, he picked out a Dilla record and the conversation soon moved onto his relationship with the late Detroit master of sampling.

“He was the funkiest… Just by how he programmed loose and not quantized, it’s like human and the selections he chose to sample… I call him the Coltrane of Hip Hop.” – Madlib on Dilla
