Hip Hop Is Read centre their 12th sample set around Mos Def’s seminal debut Black On Both Sides.
Before the name change and the fake stories about being denied entry into the US, Dante Terrell Smith was known as – and is still widely known as – Mos Def. His solo debut, Black On Both Sides, acted as a divergence from the seeming commercialisation of hip hop towards the late 90s with live instrumentation and political lyricism. A total of 38 samples feature in the set courtesy of Hip Hop Is Read including the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Fela Kuti, Aretha Franklin and KRS-One.
