ONE TO WATCH: Dot

Dot

Classical to electronic: a smooth transition by 20-year old producer Dot.

This is a first here at Sampleface. The first female producer featured on One To Watch since we started the feature. That’s not to say there aren’t any around (there are LOADS) but quite a few of them are more established than others. In the meantime, we’ll take a look at Dot (real name Kate Ellwanger) from Washington, USA. She’s only 20 but already she has made her name as a classical composer, pianist and opera singer. That’s some repertoire for a producer. So, what turned her onto production? According to her Soundcloud, having studied at Chapman University’s Conservatory of Music, she found her self at the class of Dubspot beat guru Steve Nalepa, where she was “introduced to electronic music composition and an internship at Alpha Pup Records”. She soon found out about the famous Low End Theory and the big Los Angeles beat community, home of well-known acts like Flying Lotus and the Brainfeeder family, and from there, the production bug bit her.

This year, she is expected to release her debut EP, Calliope, on Alpha Pup Records, and cites her influences as Nosaj Thing, Portishead, James Blake, Four Tet, Sufjan Stevens, Steve Reich, Beethoven, Tim Burton and Salvador Dali. Expansive and surreal don’t even begin to describe that kind of style but it’s certainly one we want to be hearing more of from the American producer.

Stream her music below and rest assured, we’ll be looking out for more of her music.
