Nottingham’s Harleighblu is our One To Watch.

She has the look of Baduizm-era Erykah and packs a hefty punch with earthy vocals and a soulful band behind her. Harleighblu may well be the newest UK soul sensation and her new album, Forget Me Not, was released on Monday. That’s a huge accolade to bestow on someone early on in their career but with the right moves, she is more than capable. The Nottingham-native grew up on her mother’s old soul and rare groove records which established her style and start writing at 7 years of age. Her determination was pushed further after her grandfather’s death and this resulted in Harleighblu finding a producer that would further her career – Joe Buhdha. It’s pretty evident upon a first listen that her vocal inspirations come from the sacred jazz pool: Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday and maybe a touch of Amy Winehouse. Her elongated melisma and raw inflections pierce through the somewhat plastic sensibilities of modern pop music and will win her plaudits for many years to come.
