London’s Mr Slim is our One To Watch.
There are certain styles when it comes to sampling. You could go for the rough unkempt loops or chop them up and rearrange them. Alternatively, you can take it back to the old school and layer them up bar by bar. Mr Slim, however, mixes those methods into his own brand of jazz hop. The London producer – real name Jake Calland – is the kind of instrumental beatmaker we love at Sampleface. Each track has its own identity and journey to take you on, whether its through smooth jazzy undertones, tranquil strings or grittier boom bap. Much like Quantic and Bonobo, Mr Slim constructs lush sonic collages with prime cut samples and an ear for composition and we hope to hear much more from him in the future.
