Quelle Chris - Shotgun & Sleek Rifle

The re-release of Quelle Chris’ 2011 album Shotgun & Sleek Rifle has dropped today via Mello Music Group, with help from House Shoes, Roc Marciano and Danny Brown.

The last time we featured Quelle Chris on Sampleface, he was on a track with Metabeats and performed really well, riding the beat like a veteran. Since then, the Detroit rapper/producer has been announced as an accompanying rapper to Black Milk’s live set for his No Poison No Paradise US tour and today, Mello Music Group has breathed life into one of his old LPs.

Shotgun & Sleek Rifle was originally released in 2011 and the album triggered talks between Quelle and the label before he subsequently joined. The LP was a departure from some of his early electro-hop stuff and saw the Detroitan return to his rapping craft with production from regular collaborator House Shoes, Roc Marciano and Quelle Chris himself and notable emcees Danny Brown and Marciano again.

The diverse nature of the samples selected on the album, from the jingling opener “Sleek Rifle” to audibly bubbling “NuBeginning4”. Albums with such unusual musical aesthetics can sometimes converge to incoherence and weirdness for the sake of being unique but Shotgun & Sleek Rifle is a solid effort that holds up well.
