New York trio Stray Phrases perform J Dilla’s Donuts live in its entirety on this week’s Saturday Matinée.

Covers of hip hop tracks are commonplace in music and jazz covers of hip hop are getting more popular but this one may have a special place in the hearts of Dilla fans (maybe even alongside Suite for Ma Dukes but that’s up for debate). Stray Phrases are a jazz trio from New York who played Donuts all the way through in small New York bar. From watching and listening, you can tell these guys studied the album and appreciated what it stood for and how it sounded. Nothing but the music. As usual, unless the crowd is full of stans, the atmosphere isn’t going to be accommodating. After all, to those who don’t know, Dilla’s Donuts could just be a lazy album made up of loops (it pains me to even boil it down to such a crude description). But fuck ’em, Welcome to the Show!
