For those without the cash for the real thing, you can now try the iMPC on your iPhone.

Arguably the most famous sampler in the history of music, the MPC has had numerous iterations over its illustrious 25 year career and with its move into the tablet world, it was only a matter of time before you could craft a beat on your phone. Well, that time is now as Akai have made the iMPC app available. The app is priced at $4.99 in the US and £2.99 in the UK, it’s pretty cheap for a pocket sized sampler. Much like the physical version back in the late 80s, Akai have come in late to the iOS sampler/drum machine party as the wonderful BeatMaker 2 (as used by our very own producer/writer The Auracle) and iMaschine have been on the market for a while now.

Some of the iMPC features:

  • 16 pads with 600 built-in samples
  • Ability to sample from the mic, a line in or tracks from iTunes
  • Note repeat
  • 3D performance mode via tilt sensing
  • Tempo delay
  • Bitcrusher
  • Compressor/limiter
  • Cue up sequences
  • Sharing via Soundcloud, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr
  • Export to WAV
  • AudioCopy / AudioPaste support

Bad news if you were looking to use MIDI though: there’s no support for it and none for use with AudioBus or JACK.
