This week’s Song for Sunday is the Souls of Mischief classic, 93 ’til Infinity.
As a producer who looks for samples, I’m often surprised by the tracks that catch my ear only to find they were caught before me and made into classics of their genres. Take Billy Cobham’s Heather. On its own, it’s a beautiful Rhodes-driven jazz ballad. Of course, I had to check it up on Whosampled to see if anyone else had flipped it. And they had. And I KNEW that had, but it must have slipped my mind. The man A-Plus was responsible for sampling Heather and creating the equally enigmatic 93 til Infinity. From the lo-fi SP1200 sounding quality of the melody to the filtered intro, it’s just a straight up hip hop classic and probably the magnum opus of the “Hiero Golden Age“.
