Observe the hypnotic new video from BenZel and Jessie Ware.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say this is my favourite track of the year. That accolade probably carries a weight of bias with it because I adore Jessie Ware but I do have some reasoning. Firstly, the production from BenZel – a Japanese duo comprised of 15 and 16 year olds Umi Takahashi and Yoko Watanabe – is exquisite. The fact that they’re so young means they have the potential to be even better and that’s just scary. Secondly, the vocals are pure perfection. No unnecessary vibratos or “money notes”, just the lyrics and the tone as one. Thirdly, it’s a Brownstone cover and Brownstone are the shit. Oh, and fourthly, the video is simple yet mesmerising. Who knew some paint and oil in water with a silhouette could look so sultry and engaging?
