Akai has released a new MPC called the MPC Sample and CDM decided to compare it to the OG, the MPC60, to see how it shapes up against its ancestor:
So, the MPC60 clearly has a lot more I/O, but internal effects on the MPC Sample I’d argue make that less of an issue. What is impressive is how many sync formats the MPC60 had to support: you could sync to SMPTE, MTC, MIDI clock, MIDI SPP, FSK, pulse wave, or quarter-note metronome clicks. It also had MIDI Sample Dump, which truly no one will miss.
Meanwhile, that USB-C connection [on the MPC Sample] does a lot!
Judging by the look of the MPC Sample, it’s spec, and that size (it’s so small and cute and I can’t believe I’m calling a sampler by the same adjective as my own son but I am), I agree with Peter on this one: it’s a great time for sub-$/£500 sampling gear. I could definitely see myself pulling this out whenever I have an idea and just putting it together.
The MPC60 walked so the Sample could run. Or something.
