SONG FOR SUNDAY #73: Da Bush Babees - The Love Song (Ft. Mos Def)

Da Bush Babees’s The Love Song featuring Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey) is our Song For Sunday this week.

While DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” might be the most famous sample of Kool and the Gang’s Summer Madness – and a staple for the season – there have been countless other flips of the classic and Da Bush Babees’ adaptation is our choice for this week’s Song For Sunday. Produced by Posdnuos of De La Soul (yep, he did more than just rhymes), The Love Song took the famous intro from the original and married it with the rawest boom bap known to the underground. The video looks almost prophetic to how underground/perceived “real” hip hop is portrayed now and features a young Mos Def who provides the hook. A worthy replacement for Summertime should you risk the wrath of your summer playlist listeners at your barbecue.
