We’re back with another Throwback Thursday and it’s time to get funky with a couple of Soul Train dance segments and classic 80s commercials.
Apologies for the absence last week but we’re back and it’s a big one this week. The video starts with two commercials: the first is for Classy Curl, the jheri curl hair product commercial that inspired the “Soul Glo” commercial in Coming To America. If you’re wondering where you recognise the girl from, that’s Ola Ray, Michael Jackson’s girlfriend from the Thriller video. I wonder if MJ used it himself. The second is for good old Mountain Dew, with a group of friends and a dog playing at the beach, as you did in the 80s.
But onto the main feature – Soul Train dancing! There’s nothing flier than the crowd on Soul Train dancing to funk and soul and this occasion is no exception, as they got down to Rick James’ Give It To Me Baby (famously sampled by J Dilla for Common’s Dooinit) and Rufus & Chaka Khan’s What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me. If you don’t feel like cutting a rug to any of those tracks, check your pulse and your eardrums. You might have gone deaf.
