We’ve chosen a full music video for this week’s Throwback Thursday – EPMD’s Gold Digger.
Take a closer look at the title of this article. That’s EPMD and not Kanye West. Gold Digger was the lead single from their third album, Business as Usual, released in 1990. There could be some parallels to draw from Kanye’s subsequent track of the same name. Both videos show fine ass women with great bodies, but EPMD’s imagery is twofold; a visual double entendre, if you will. While the lyrics are about the problem with marrying a “gold digger” – “Brainlocked, my whole damn head was malfunctional/Cause I forgot to co-sign a prenuptial, agreement” – there are also scenes of women digging for gold, which in itself is ironic. Genius. But we couldn’t leave it without discussing the samples. As it was the early 90s, James Brown and Funkadelic were still highly important in the sample game, the latter of which was used just a year earlier on De La Soul’s classic Me Myself and I.
