Fear Of A Black Hat is our Saturday Matinée feature presentation this week – a mockumentary about the ups and downs of a controversial 90’s hip hop group, NWH (Niggaz with Hats).

This Is Spinal Tap is probably the most famous music “mockumentary”, centred around a fictional rock band called Spinal Tap. Ten years later, Rusty Cundieff (director of last week’s Saturday Matinée film, Tales From The Hood) put together Fear Of A Black Hat. The film shows sociologist Nina Blackburn as she follows N.W.H.around for a year as part of her thesis on hip hop as a means of communication. Within that, Fear Of A Black Hat succeeds in parodying elements of hip hop culture of the time, from G-Funk rap to “daisy power”. Comedy, interesting subtext and hip hop. What’s not to love?
