How Did I Miss That: Gang Starr – Deadly Habitz

Gang Starr’s Deadly Habitz is the subject of the latest instalment of “How Did I Miss That?”

With production credits for the great and good of hip-hop spanning almost three decades, everyone has a favourite Primo track – whether it be the brooding intensity of NY State Of Mind by Nas or the laid-back summer vibes of Common’s The Sixth Sense, there’s something for everyone. But it’s easy to take the back catalogue of Gang Starr classics he built with Guru for granted – delving into the archives, I fell in love with this chilled beat – Guru’s relaxed monotone never sounds better than when it’s accompanied by a jazz sample-heavy Primo beat, the lazy clarinet on this one cut from Steve Gray’s Beverly Hills. This is a low-key classic.
