MIX: NTS's Edna Martinez explores the world of champeta criolla for The Vinyl Factory

It’s party time on the Colombian north coast!

In January, Edna Martinez spoke to The Vinyl Factory about her background in DJing and record collecting, and the champeta criolla genre. Champeta, or terapia, is a genre and dance derived from the the Caribbean coast of Colombia with a rich Afro-Latin history.

I would say a selection of champeta criolla on vinyl is quite uncommon and its sound stands for the Colombian Caribbean. This mixtape contains iconic songs where the influence of mbaqanga and soukous is noticeable and it features classic singers of this genre, who are mostly from Palenque, the first free town in America.
