SONG FOR SUNDAY #55: Prince – The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Prince - The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Prince’s The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is our Song For Sunday next week.

Having featured The Music Snobs last night, I listened to a couple of episodes this morning dedicated to Prince. Out of the songs they discussed, I decided to pick The Ballad of Dorothy Parker from his 1987 opus Sign O’ The Times. The song typifies the amalgamation of genres and styles exhibited on the whole LP with elements of soul, raw funk and pop. From the opening snare roll and superb drum programming to the minimal but funkadelic instrumentation, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is something hip hop producers should pay close attention. The composition, placement of musical layers and drum patterning make for a musical masterclass. And then there’s the lyricism; patent Prince quirkiness.

She said “Sounds like a real man to me”
“You’re kinda cute, you want to take a bath?
Awh I said “Cool, but I’m leaving my pants on” (she say)
“‘Cause I’m kind of going with someone”

Nods to Joni Mitchell follow and it’s so intricate and interesting and loving. Prince in a nutshell.
