Detroit’s Theo Parrish has us shuffling with his broken beat/house/techno joint, Footwork.
Since the early days of 4hero, Jazzanova and Bugz In The Attic, the genre known as broken beat has fascinated me. Its roots stem from advancements of rhythm in jazz fusion, electro and techno and work as a counterpart to the flat 4/4 of traditional house we hear today. Of course, there are musicians who bite their proverbial thumbs at simplistic beats and we have forward thinking artists such as Theo Parrish to thank for new innovations. His latest track, Footwork, starts with an organic hi hat pattern with all the sensibilities of an 80s electro anthem before the rumbling bassline/kick drum ensemble enter the stage. As for the visuals, Parrish keeps it all Motown with a flurry of dance moves against the backdrop of his hometown – gritty and ever present.
