There’s just no denying Grace Jones’ aura and presence in the 1980s and, to be fair, whenever she’s mentioned in conversation. Her fifth studio album Nightclubbing became her best selling and the one everyone remembers her for thanks to hits like Pull Up to the Bumper, I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango) and covers of Bill Withers’ Use Me and David Bowie and Iggy Pop’s Nightclubbing. Everything from the album cover, featuring Grace in her androgynous eminence, to the wonderful melding of reggae and new wave gave the LP an alluring appeal.
Amongst the covers already on Nightclubbing will be a new track, previously left off the album. It would seem Grace’s version of Gary Numan’s “Me! I Disconnect From You” didn’t fit but to me, it would have slotted in just nicely with its crisp reggae production and flawless vocals from Jones. Of course, we have keyboardist Wally Badarou and Jamaican duo Sly & Robbie for their superb musicianship but Grace owns the song and makes it her own.
