I had the pleasure of going to see Madlib and DOOM in London last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This video interview appears to have come off the back of that gig and shows Madlib in his usual humble presence talking on a wide range of music topics.
As you probably know, Madlib takes things as they come. He’s not of a “mainstream” mould of artists that make structured albums for strict release dates – when the music is ready to be dropped, by his standards, that’s when it’ll be heard. The Oxnard-born producer touched upon this when asked what he was working on but there was more. He mentioned working on a new Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey) album, “early Kraftwerk-type stuff”, some new jazz material and a new Quasimoto album (hopefully brand new).
He also talks about his musical origins and what excited him being a musician. But the biggest news from the interview was that Madvillainy 2 could be ready, but it was down to when DOOM was ready for it go out and Dilla has unreleased electronic AND jazz albums in the vaults. Lord only knows how dope they’ll sound.
“Dilla’s still king, you nahmean?” – Madlib
