Marvin Gaye’s amazing performance of Let’s Get It On in Montreux is our Throwback Thursday this week.
It’s been nearly 30 years since the untimely death of Marvin Gaye and while R&B and soul have moved on drastically since then, his influence is still there amongst his musical descendants.
Back in 1980, Gaye performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival. That year saw a couple of big names in the lineup, with Santana and Van Morrison playing to 75,000. His flawless performance of Let’s Get It On was a true measure of the man’s talent, sweating profusely in his red suit but still managing to belt out the lyrics, note-perfect. Those are the kinds of live performances you live for and I would have loved to have been there had I been born a decade or so early. Alas, I have YouTube.
