Last year saw Gregory Porter’s release of Be Good, a sublime jazz album from an emphatically soulful voice. It made my albums of the year list and after signing to Blue Note Records this year, he is ready to add himself to my list for 2013 with Liquid Spirit. His image is straight out of the mid-20th century age of bustling jazz and his voice carries the smooth power and soul of a veteran who has been performing since then. All of this is supported by fantastic melodic backing, some funky rhythms like on “Musical Genocide” and moving lyricism.
UPDATE: The album is also available on iTunes with bonus tracks. Looks like we missed that. Oops.
