How Did I Miss That: NEXT Collective – Marvin’s Room

Have you heard NEXT Collective’s gorgeous jazz cover of Drake’s Marvin’s Room? Well, now you can.

When I first heard about a Drake track called Marvin’s Room, I thought it’d be some wet limp ode to Marvin Gaye (because it’s Drake after all). But when I heard there was a jazz cover involved, my interest was piqued. The group responsible for this are called NEXT Collective and they come from a wide variety of areas, from Houston to Toronto. You’d be mistaken for thinking it would be a smooth jazz cover if you’re opinions on Drake are much like mine as this is far from the Book of Kenny G. Christian aTunde Adjuah, the trumpeter, puts in a lot of smooth airy soul into the vocal melodic reinterpretation. The overall feeling on this is very similar to that of Swedish jazz group Esbjorn Svensson Trio and if you like softer “cloud drifting” jazz, make sure to keep tabs on NEXT Collective.
