SATURDAY MATINÉE: A Band Called Death (Documentary)

Before punk even existed, three brothers from Detroit formed a band in their spare bedroom, moving from R&B to rock. A Band Called Death tells their story.

Making a transition from R&B to rock music during Motown’s disco era might seem like a risky move now but that didn’t stop Death (then known as Rock Fire Funk Express) after attending an Alice Cooper concert in the early 70s. Four decades later, their history is the subject of a documentary called A Band Called Death and it shows the band and their early beginnings – now credited as being not only the first African-American punk band but the first punk band ever.
