I’m always here for a Tall Black Guy flip and anything involving De La Soul. So when I heard TBG had flipped Stakes Is High, I was pretty stoked. Reading about the change of time signature from 4/4 to 6/8 threw all expectations out of the window apart from the important one: this was gonna be dope. TBG retained the same sample Dilla used but switched it up completely, with jitterbug vocals from Pos and Dave and effects galore on the Ahmad Jamal classic. It’s borderline glitch hop with a deep boom bap basis which adds to its wondrous charm. Well played, sir.
