How Did I Miss That: Iamsu! - Hipster Girls

Cali’s Iamsu! dropped an ode to hipster girls and it missed our attention. Until now.

It took me over a year before I finally joined Instagram and Iamsu!’s “Hipster Girls” actually explains why. The Cali rappers gives a shout out to all those “hipster girls”, their fashion and how they live their lives. But perhaps there’s a deeper subtext in his lyrics. Amongst all the flannel shirts, beanies and rolling through San Fran, Iamsu! addresses the modern culture of superficiality through internet media (“Hella likes, hella likes/Instagram, that’s life, am I right?”) and questions “what’s gonna happen when the hype fades”. Stepping away from the lyricism, the beat is well suited for the West Coast with its “summer cruising in your soft top” vibe and cleverly keeping its distance from a straight trap rhythm, the type of music often associated with those very “hipster girls”.
