Before EDM became a plaything for frat bros and TV adverts, it started out in the underground clubs of the Midwest and New York. Chicago had their house, New York had their garage music (not to be confused with UK garage) and Detroit had their techno and the latter is the focus of this week’s Saturday Matinée documentary.
Detroit Techno City follows the early paths of the genre’s pioneers including Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson. While we can thank the likes of Theo Parrish, Waajeed, Richie Hawtin and Moodymann for their contributions in Detroit techno’s “second wave”, the genre’s foundations deserve recognition for what they’ve helped to create.
