Before the name change and the fake stories about being denied entry into the US, Dante Terrell Smith was known as—and is still widely known as—Mos Def. His solo debut, Black On Both Sides, acted as a divergence from the seeming commercialisation of hip hop towards the late 90s with live instrumentation and political lyricism.
