Autumn is nearly upon us and that means Sunset Blvd is close to release. The date was originally 17th September but that has since been pushed back to 1st October (conveniently our 1st birthday!). While we wait a little longer, Yancey Boys have dropped the first official single from the album in Quicksand. Dilla is of course on the beat for this with yet another classic 90’s vibe; a mellow guitar sample, something he used often during his mid-90’s era of smooth instrumentals.
But major props go to the clientele – frequent Dilla collaborator Common rises to the occasion like it was a track off his own album while the current Yancey Boys – and Frank Nitt and Illa J – contemplate their own careers without making it all sound saccharine. But who’s that on the hook? Enter Dezi Paige. I like that they’ve given opportunities to otherwise “unknown” female vocalists and the added bonus here is that her jazz/bluesy performance suits the beat wonderfully.
